Planning your shore excursions for the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea? Having personally sailed these routes—including a voyage with the Peace Boat in 2023 and a fantastic winter cruise on the Celebrity Infinity in 2025—I know how overwhelming it can be.
Here is my honest, detailed cruise port guide for Athens, Santorini, Crete, and Kusadasi, focusing on how to beat the crowds, what we actually experienced, and the best independent tours to book.
Athens / Piraeus (Greece) – The Acropolis & Plaka

- Our Schedule: I spent almost a day here in 2023 and in 2025
Beating the Massive Acropolis Ticket Lines As soon as we reached the Athens city center from Piraeus Port in 2023, our first stop was a local gyro shop to grab some delicious Greek wraps and use their free Wi-Fi to plan our walking route.

We then headed straight to the Acropolis. Earlier that morning, some cruise passengers who took the ship’s official shore excursions mentioned that the crowds were horrific, and they had to queue for over an hour just to get tickets.

Luckily, by the time we arrived later in the day, the line wasn’t nearly as long, though the site itself was still absolutely packed with people.

The ancient Parthenon is incredibly grand and majestic—snapping endless photos definitely made the €20 entrance fee worth every cent! It wasn’t too hot in an overcast day in May.

The view worth the climb.
The Acropolis Museum: Seeing the Real Caryatids Skip-the-Line

I visited the Acropolis Museum in 2025 after my Virgin Voyages cruise. We booked our tickets in advance through GetYourGuide, which allowed us to completely bypass the ticket lines and walk straight inside.
This museum is absolutely packed with incredible artifacts, and it is a must-visit because the real, authentic treasures are preserved right here.

One of the absolute highlights was getting up close to the genuine Caryatids (the famous draped female figures serving as architectural columns) to admire their incredible craftsmanship.

Inside the modern, glass-walled building, you can actually look through the windows and admire a stunning, panoramic view of the Acropolis standing proud on the mountain above. It provides a beautiful connection between the history and the ruins.
My Go-To Athens Restaurant: A Spot I’ve Visited Twice

In addition to that hidden tavern, there is another fantastic local restaurant in Athens that I love so much I have actually returned to it twice across my different trips to the city. It’s The Greco’s Project located close to Monastiraki station. Everything at this restaurant is very reasonably priced, and the staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming.
An added bonus for cruise travelers is that their Wi-Fi is fast and works perfectly, making it the ideal spot to relax, enjoy a great meal, and comfortably catch up on messages or plan your next move.
Sourcing Greek Souvenirs: My Favorite Shop in Athens

To round out our time in Athens, we headed over to a fantastic local souvenir shop that I actually loved so much I visited it twice across my trips to the city. Athens is one of the best places on the itinerary to shop for authentic Greek gifts because the selection is huge and the prices are much more reasonable than what you will find on the islands like Santorini.
CRUISE EXCURSIONS FOR ATHENS Piraeus Port is about 30 minutes away from the city center. Do not risk missing your ship with public train delays. Book a guaranteed return transfer:
- Must-Book: [Athens: Acropolis Museum Ticket with optional Audio Guide] – Saves you from waiting in the hot sun to see the real Caryatids.
- All-In-One Transfer: [Private Transfer from Piraeus Port to Athens Airport] – Guarantees a stress-free ride from the port to the ruins and back.
- Foodie Option: [Greek Food Walking Tour in Athens](Viator Experience Award winner) – Perfect for discovering authentic taverns.
Santorini (Greece) – Akrotiri Ruins, Oia, and Fira

- Crucial Transit Note: This is a Tender Port. You must take smaller boats to get ashore, which eats up a lot of time.
Akrotiri: A 3,500-Year-Old Minoan City

Since I was leading a tour group here(as volunteer interpreter on Peace boat), we headed straight to Akrotiri, an incredible archaeological site dating back 3,500 years. Much like Pompeii in Italy, this entire ancient city was completely buried and preserved by volcanic ash after a massive eruption. It is mind-blowing to see how highly advanced this ancient civilization was. They actually had some of the world’s earliest indoor flush toilets and a complex sewage system!
Exploring Oia and Fira: Stunning Views, Priceless Souvenirs

After Akrotiri, we visited the iconic clifftop towns of Oia and Fira for some casual sightseeing. The Aegean Sea looks absolutely breathtaking in person—the signature blue-domed churches and whitewashed buildings are incredibly striking.

However, be prepared for two things: the crowds and the prices. Even outside peak summer(was there in May 2023), the tourists were everywhere. It is easily one of the most crowded cruise ports in Europe. Furthermore, compared to Athens, shopping for souvenirs in Santorini is significantly more expensive.

While wandering the cobblestone streets, you will definitely spot the cute local donkeys. They are a famous traditional mode of transportation on the island, and visitors can actually ride them up the steep cliff trails to the town centers. However, since we had a tight schedule with our tour bus and had to head back to the port together, we didn’t have extra free time to try the donkey rides. It was a fast-paced day, but purely capturing the photos made the trip worth it.

CRUISE EXCURSIONS FOR SANTORINI Because tendering ashore and navigating the cliffs can eat up hours of your day, booking an independent shore excursion with guaranteed priority tendering and private bus transport is the best way to see both Oia and Akrotiri without stress:
- Top Pick: [Santorini Day Tour: Akrotiri, Villages, Wine and Sunset in Oia] – Bypasses the cliff traffic and covers all major spots.
- Trending tour: Premium Small-Group Catamaran Cruise with BBQ, Open Bar, Transfer

Mykonos (Greece) – Postcard-Perfect Cobblestone Mazes

- Our Schedule: Full Day (Vibrant Greek Island Vibe)
Shades of Okinawa Blue & Endless Photo Spots
Mykonos was my third Greek island, and while it shares its fame with Santorini, I found it even more photogenic and effortlessly beautiful.

The moments we stepped off Virgin’s free transfer, we were greeted by stunning coastal views. The vibrant, multi-toned blue of the Aegean Sea here instantly reminded me of the crystal-clear waters of Okinawa.

The entire island feels like a living postcard. As you wander through the iconic, sun-bleached Chora (Mykonos Town), you will find sleepy island cats napping in quiet corners, friendly shop dogs greeting travelers, and bursts of bright, colorful flowers contrasting beautifully against the stark white walls.
Chasing White Luxury Fronts & A Hillside Starbucks
What makes Mykonos truly unique is how every single building—from local supermarkets and historic churches to high-end luxury boutiques—is required to blend into the island’s signature cycladic architecture.

We had a blast hunting down these stunning white-washed store fronts. We passed by a beautifully minimalist Swarovski, and the absolute highlight was the completely white Louis Vuitton boutique. Curiously, despite housing priceless designer luxury, the boutique had no air conditioning running inside! However, the staff there were incredibly warm, welcoming, and honestly looked like professional runway models.

💡 Quick Cruise Tip: To avoid burning a hole in your wallet at touristy, overpriced restaurants in Mykonos, I highly recommend eating a hearty meal on the ship before stepping off, or heading back early for dinner. This strategy works flawlessly on Virgin Voyages, a cruise line famous for its exceptional, top-notch dining venues that are already included in your fare. If you want to see which dining spots are actually worth your time, check out my ultimate Virgin Voyages Restaurant Review & Dining Guide to plan your onboard meals!

For a great walking destination, we strolled all the way through the charming labyrinth of souvenir shops and headed up to the Starbucks located on the hillside. The walk rewards you with amazing views and captures the ultimate, laid-back Mediterranean vacation atmosphere that makes Mykonos so unforgettable. There’s a local pharmacy next to the Starbucks where I bought Korres lipbalm and Roger&Gallet perfume set.

CRUISE EXCURSIONS FOR MYKONOS Mykonos is best explored on foot, but the winding alleys are a literal maze designed to confuse pirates. Maximize your shore time with these top-rated experiences:
- Trending Tour: [Premium Small-Group Catamaran Cruise with BBQ, Open Bar, Transfer]
- Originals by Getyourguide: [Mykonos: Winery Vineyard Experience with Food & Wine Tasting]
Chania, Crete (Greece) – Venetian Harbor Stroll

- Our Schedule: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Celebrity Infinity – Our Shortest Port)
Crucial Warning: The Sunday Shopping Lockout Major Warning for Cruise Travelers: We happened to visit Chania on a Sunday. Unfortunately, Sunday is a strict rest day in Greece, meaning the entire modern shopping street—including major stores like Sephora and local pharmacies—was completely closed! If you plan to do heavy cosmetics or brand shopping, keep this calendar restriction in mind.
Our Walkable Route via Free Cruise Shuttle
Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the cruise line provided a complimentary shuttle bus taking passengers directly to the city center, which made DIY transit incredibly easy. The shuttle drops you off at the Municipal Garden (Kipos). While the park itself is quite ordinary (perhaps because we visited in February, we didn’t see many flowers) and has an old, simple clock tower, it serves as the perfect starting point for a walking tour.
Sunsets, Snow-Capped Mountains & Greek Souvenirs

Chania is incredibly easy to explore on foot. We walked down to the iconic Old Venetian Port. Even though it was February, the weather was gloriously sunny and felt exactly like summer, complete with lively street musicians along the waterfront. This was the southernmost point of our itinerary, and curiously, while it felt like summer at the harbor, we could see beautiful snow-capped mountain peaks in the far distance!

Despite the main shopping street being closed, the local souvenir shops around the old town were fully open and highly rewarding. Greek souvenirs offer fantastic value—the quality is excellent, prices are reasonable, and there is a massive variety. We ended up buying several beautifully crafted local leather bags here at a great price.

Before heading back, we stopped by a historic cafe located inside the Municipal Garden called Kipos Café, which has been open since 1870. The coffee and drinks were exceptionally affordable! The only minor downside was that the staff seemed slightly short-handed, so it took some patience to order and receive our drinks. After relaxing there for about 40 minutes, we took the shuttle back and boarded the ship by 5:00 PM.
CRUISE EXCURSIONS FOR CRETE Since this is a very short port stop, a quick guided walk ensures you see the best of the Venetian history without getting lost:
- Top Pick: [Insert Viator Link for Chania Old Town & Harbor Walking Tour] – Efficient, highly-rated, and gets you back to the free shuttle on time.
Kusadasi (Turkey) – Ephesus & Pigeon Island

- Our Schedule: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Celebrity Infinity)
The Crowd Hack & The Tour We Chose We disembarked at 8:00 AM and easily found our independent guide holding a signboard with our names right outside the port terminal. We booked a budget-friendly option online: the “For Cruisers: Skip-the-Line Small Group Ephesus Tour“ (around 26 USD per person, excluding the Ephesus entrance fee).
We arrived at Ephesus by 8:50 AM, entering from the upper gate. Exploring the ancient ruins from top to bottom before the massive cruise line shore excursions arrived was incredibly peaceful. By 9:30 AM, the massive tour groups began pouring in (we even ran into major tour groups from Taiwan), so getting there before 9:00 AM is an absolute must! Afterward, we made a quick stop at the nearby Temple of Artemis. While historically significant, the site itself is quite empty now, making it a very brief stop.

The Honest Warning: The Leather & Carpet Shopping Trap

Here is the honest part of the tour: after the ruins, we were taken to a local leather factory shop where we spent about an hour and ended up buying three leather jackets.
Afterwards, we were driven to a carpet-weaving venue for a lunch that wasn’t originally on our itinerary. Interestingly, we noticed a few official cruise line shore excursion groups sitting at the next table. It turns out that even if you pay a premium for the ship’s official Celebrity tours, you will likely still be brought to the exact same carpet presentation! They serve you a complimentary lunch first, followed by a passionate sales pitch for Turkish carpets.
Pigeon Island & Waterfront Walk

We were dropped back at the port at around 1:30 PM, leaving us plenty of time to explore independently. Right next to where the cruise ships dock, there is a beautiful island connected by a causeway called Güvercinada (Pigeon Island), which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. It’s an easy, scenic 20-minute walk from the port terminal.

The island features a Maritime Trade Museum; while the museum interior has limited exhibits, the surrounding castle grounds and fortress walls offer spectacular photo opportunities. We spent about 1 hour and 40 minutes here capturing stunning shots.

Walking back to the harbor, the waterfront is lined with charming cafes. You can grab a coffee and take photos with the famous El Heykeli (Hand Statue), the “I Love Kusadasi” sign, and various scenic photo frames where you can capture your cruise ship perfectly in the background. We safely returned to the ship by 5:50 PM.

CRUISE EXCURSIONS FOR KUSADASI If you want to see Ephesus without being forced into leather or carpet sales pitches, book a private, no-shopping tour:
- Best No-Shopping Tour: [Private Ephesus Tour | History Only | No Shopping Stops] – Highly recommended to explore at your own pace.
- Best Budget tour: [For Cruisers: Skip-the-Line Small Group Ephesus Tour] – Great if you don’t mind a quick local shop stop.
Final Thoughts: Making the Most of Your Aegean Cruise

Cruising through the Aegean Sea is an incredible way to check multiple bucket-list Mediterranean destinations off your list in a single voyage. However, because your time in each port is limited, the key to an unforgettable trip lies in smart preparation—knowing when to skip the tourist traps, how to outsmart the crowds at landmark sites, and leveraging your ship’s premium onboard dining.
Whether you are stepping onto the historic streets of Athens or wandering through the picture-perfect, white-washed mazes of Mykonos, approaching each island with a solid plan ensures you spend less time stressing and more time soaking in the magical island vibes. Pack your sunscreen, plan your shore excursions in advance, and get ready for the voyage of a lifetime.
